Show Boat
SHOW BOAT

(Comedy | Drama | Musical | Romance)
[1 hour 53 minutes]

Adaptation of the Broadway musical. Magnolia Hawks is the lovely
but protected, and thus very naive, daughter of Cap'n Andy Hawks,
the genial proprietor of a show boat that cruises the Missisippi,
and his nagging wife, Parthy. She is best friends with the show
boat's star, Julie LaVerne, but Julie and her husband Steve are
forced to leave when it is revealed that Julie has "Negro" blood
in her, thereby breaking the state law by being married to the
white Steve. Magnolia replaces Julie as the show boat's female
star, and the show's new male star is the suave gambler Gaylord
Ravenal. "Nola" and Gaylord fall in love and marry against
Parthy's wishes. They and their young daughter lead the high
life when Gaylord is lucky in gambling, but live like dirt when
he's unlucky. During one such unlucky streak, a broken Gaylord
leaves Nola, and she is forced to start over by returning to
the stage. Like Old Man River, as the famous song from this
show goes, she just keeps rollin' along.

STAGE STRUCK

(Comedy | Musical)
[1 hour 31 minutes]

Broadway dance director George Randall (Dick Powell) is stuck
with staging a Broadway show starring Peggy Revere (Joan Blondell),
a wealthy but untalented performer who is starring only because she
is backing the show. Tempers flare during rehearsals, but suave
producer Fred Harris (Warren William) smooths things over by
pretending to each combatant that each one secretly loves the other.
Trouble is, Randall really has eyes for chorus girl Ruth Williams
(Jeanne Madden). On opening night, the tempestuous Peggy storms out
of the production, leaving Ruth to play the lead and carry the show.
Can she pull it off?

BORN TO DANCE

(Musical | Comedy)
[1 hour 46 minutes]

Sailor Ted meets at the Lonely Hearts Club of his friend Gunny's wife,
Jenny, a girl, Nora Paige, and falls in love. Nora wants to become a
dancer on Broadway. Ted rescues the Pekinese of Lucy James, a Broadway
star during a public relations campaign on his submarine. Lucy falls
in love with Ted, and Ted is ordered by his Captain to meet her in a
night club, in spite of the fact that he has a date with Nora. Nora,
who lives with Jenny and her and Gunny's daughter, doesn't want to
hear anything from Ted, after she spotted a picture of Ted and Lucy in
the morning paper. Lucy convinces her manager Dinehart to stop the
press campaign and tells him that she would leave the production, if
another photo or article of her and Ted is published. Nora has become
her understudy, and she begins to think her behaviour to Ted over.
Suddenly she is fired after Dinehart told her to dance a number Lucy
James called undanceable. But when Ted is told the whole story, he
knows what to do.
